Maidstone Mela – A Brief History:

approx 20,000 people each year. The Mela celebrates the
multi-cultural diversity of Maidstone & Kent through music, food and
dance & was the first multi-cultural Mela in the UK. Maidstone Mela
was the brainchild of former Maidstone Mayor Morelle De’Souza who
wanted a festival to bring all local communities together and
highlight their best talents in light of the global impact of the 9/11
attacks.
The Mela is organised in partnership by Maidstone Borough Council,
Cohesion Plus Kent and the Kent Equality Cohesion Council & The Mela
Advisory Committee inc. local community organisations and partners
